KUDHEIHA and IUF Hold Evaluation Meeting with Hotel Representatives

The Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotels, Educational Institutions, and Hospitals Workers (KUDHEIHA), in collaboration with the International Union of Food, Agricultural, Hotel, Restaurant, Catering, Tobacco and Allied Workers’ Associations (IUF), has successfully concluded an evaluation meeting with representatives from the hospitality sector.

The session marked the completion of a project that has been running since 2023, and provided an opportunity to assess its successes, challenges, and the way forward.

Key Areas of Evaluation

The evaluation focused on several critical issues affecting hotel workers and the broader hospitality sector:

  1. Climate Change – assessing the sector’s preparedness and resilience.

  2. Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) – ensuring safe and healthy workplaces for all.

  3. Gender-Based Violence and Harassment (GBVH) – addressing and preventing abuses at the workplace.

  4. Non-Discrimination of Workers with HIV and AIDS – promoting inclusion and protection of vulnerable workers.

  5. Precarious Employment – tackling casualization and promoting secure, decent work.

Achievements to Celebrate

The evaluation revealed notable progress:

  • 70% of hotels represented by KUDHEIHA have now developed detailed Sexual Harassment Policies.
  • 40% of hotels have established HIV & AIDS workplace policies.

These milestones represent major steps towards safer, fairer, and more inclusive workplaces across the hospitality sector.

Sustaining the Gains

Beyond policy development, the union has strengthened partnerships with other associations to ensure the continuity of sensitization efforts. This will include ongoing meetings, trainings, and capacity-building programs aimed at empowering both workers and employers.

KUDHEIHA celebrates these achievements as proof that collective action and collaboration can drive meaningful change in the hospitality industry, creating a sector that respects workers’ rights, promotes dignity, and ensures sustainable progress.
